A Summer Serenade 2023

Weymouth Choral Society’s performance with striking solo debut by local rock singer and baritone

The versatile Weymouth Choral Society, going from strength to strength under the musical direction of Helen Brind, treated our seaside town this weekend to its annual Summer Serenade. ‘Let’s have a bit of fun shall we’, said the director about her programme, which included a selection of well-known hits from musicals, films and the music hall.  Settling back for a relaxing time ‘Beside the Seaside’, an unexpected and striking character then took centre stage. In his debut solo concert performance, the up-and-coming baritone and rock singer, Roman Hynch, captivated with his powerful rendition of Gilbert & Sullivan’s  ‘Pirate King’ – dressed in black, dangerous and a force of nature! In complete contrast, ‘Hushabye Mountain’ was soothing and reflective, while ‘Pick-a-Pocket’ from ‘Oliver!’ was mischievous and playful and ‘Who am I?’, a technically challenging piece from ‘Les Miserables’, admirably demonstrated Roman’s vocal range and skill.

Accompanied throughout by the talented pianist Louise Dukes, the choir achieved great moments of four-part harmony. Their combined voices blended to create an evocative soundscape when singing the famous ‘Beyond the Sea’, the crescendo of their voices mimicking the rolling waves. Another highlight was the choir’s interpretation of ‘I Won’t Dance’, an iconic song immortalised by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. The questions and answers, protest and persuasion, were a lively exchange between sections of the choir. Finales from ‘The Sound of Music’ and ‘Les Miserables’ were also much enjoyed by an enthusiastic audience.

The essence of this genre of music – with its contrasts of love and longing, emotion and humour, darkness and light – was showcased by this focused choir that is capable of a wide range of material. Their next event is on Saturday, 4th November at St Paul’s Church, Weymouth: ‘Masters of Music’, an exciting concert including operatic and sacred masterpieces of composers such as Mozart, Verdi and Puccini.
