Weymouth Choral Society and the Poole-based Barclays House Choir presented a performance of Mendelssohn’s oratorio ‘Elijah’ in the beautiful setting of Wimborne Minster. The two choirs are both directed by Helen Brind, who said of the joint venture: ‘ We are thrilled to have combined to form a choral force of almost 100 voices, which together with four professional soloists and the full symphonic sound of St Peter’s Orchestra, brought to life this very dramatic and intense choral work.’ The role of Elijah was sung by the experienced Dorset-based bass, Jonathan Prentice, with the remaining roles being interpreted by three further highly-acclaimed soloists: tenor Paul Smy, mezzo-soprano Kate Howden and soprano Carrie-Anne Williams. St Peter’s Orchestra was joined by Chris Dowie on the splendid Wimborne Minster organ, to complete the imposing full symphony orchestra required for this iconic choral piece.
