GOOD OLD-FASHIONED harmony, a line from Irving Berlin’s hit song Simple Melody, just about sums up the programme set forth by Weymouth Choral Society and the Casterbridge Male Voice Choir in a joint charity concert for Help for Heroes.
A total of around 70 singers made the most of a mixture of songs from the shows, a smattering of opera and the occasional spiritual in a tuneful evening that was a delight from start to finish.
Helen Brind has maintained her high standard as director of Weymouth Choral Society with performances that combine style with excellent harmony arrangements by the well disciplined singers. Their accompanist, Louise Dukes, was also given the opportunity to show off her skill on the accordion with some lively selections of popular tunes which were very well received.
Casterbridge Male Voice Choir, under the enthusiastic direction of David Knight, still struggles to find younger members but their rendering of a selection from Les Miserables was both lively and deeply emotional.
Special mention must also go to their piano accompanist Jane Jenkins who played with immense sympathy and skill in a concert that was toe-tapping, vibrant and musically satisfying, worthy indeed of the charity for which it performed.
